Time to Get Your Spring On

If you have been lucky enough to have had a day or two of nice weather over the last few weeks, it’s probably got you in the mood for Spring. However, after a cold winter and some miserable weather both you and your home are probably not Spring ready. So, we’re on hand to help give you our top tips to get your home and skin gleaming this Spring.

Pop the pastels and give your powder room a lick of paint

With your bathroom likely to be one of the smallest rooms in your home (unless you live like the Kardarshians with bedroom sized bathrooms), the aim is to make the most of the space keeping it fresh, clean and clutter free. We’re a sucker for pastels and with Spring likely to be in full bloom in just a few weeks, now is the time to get your colour on. Think Aqua, lemon, pastel pinks and if you’re brave enough, lime – your powder room will be spruced up and Spring ready in no time.

Flowers and Fresh Scents

Whether you can’t decide on a colour or don’t want to commit your bathroom to a colour relationship you may soon grow tired of, perk up your powder room with some fresh (or artificial flowers) in bright colours. We’re talking those beaut spring summer flowers we all know and love – daffodils (of course), tulips in a range of colours and Azaleas.

When it comes to fresh scents, incorporating some lavender, lemon and rosemary (even better when it’s homemade) will work wonders and add the freshness to your bathroom. If you’re feeling like adding something extra to your bathroom, why not try and pick up a bunch of lilacs. Blooming only 3 weeks a year, you’ll have to move fast but a bunch of these will brighten any room and leave that sweet scent we love!

Ditch the old products – they’re so last year

You may or may not be aware about use by dates on cosmetics – yes the majority of them have them. Whether it’s a use by date similar to what you see on food produce or simply the open container icon indicating the product must be used within 12 months of opening, they are there and you should be paying attention to them. So what better time to ditch the products that have seen better days? Aside from skin irritations and eye infections that can be caused by cosmetics nearing their end, with your skin changing as we approach Spring, it’s the perfect time to give that make-up bag a refresh. Of course these should be disposed of properly and be kept out of reach of children and animals.

Although this will differ per individual product, you can expect your products to last around the following:

  • Mascara: 4 months
  • Liquid products such as eyeliners, lip liners and polishes: 6 to 12 months
  • Foundation, concealer, primers and highlighters: 12 months
  • Powder based products such as blushes, bronzers and eyeshadows as well as most lipsticks: 12 – 18 months

Out with the old and in with the new

As well as disposing of your old cosmetics in place of fresh new ones, Spring brings around a whole set of new requirements. Although you should be using moisturiser all year round, Spring calls for a lighter weight moisturiser in favour of those rich ones we have been using the last few months. And, although we should have been using an SPF on our exposed areas, adding full body sun protection is essential come Spring time. Think you’ll be getting your pins out? Add a soft, gentle exfoliator to get your skin in tip top spring condition. And while we’re on the topic of bathroom cabinets, it’s time to check (and replace if needed) our creams and ointments in here.

Keep your cabinet in tip top condition

We mentioned in a previous post but bathroom mirrors can make your smaller bathroom appear larger. If you haven’t yet invested in a bathroom cabinet, this can act both as an enhancement to your bathroom as well as being great for storage space. With all these new products, you will probably want to add that little bit of extra sparkle but if you already have one, make sure this is cleaned regularly and kept smudgy finger free.
