How to spruce up your bathroom for the summer

The Great British summer is now in full swing, with one crucial difference this year – it’s actually sunny! For the first time in what seems like forever, we can all break out our barbecues and start hosting the kind of garden parties we were beginning to think we’d never to get to experience again.

There’s nothing quite like a barbecue in the sun with friends. Amongst all the other concerns that people have when holding a barbecue though – meat, booze, seating and so on -, there’s one crucial element that is often forgotten; the bathroom.

The bathroom is the room on which most homeowners are judged. Even the broadest of smiles and welcoming of demeanours can’t mask the horrors of a non-welcoming, dirty bathroom. And with the summer likely meaning that more people are going to be coming to visit, the potential for a social reputation hit is high!

Luckily, bringing your bathroom up to scratch in time for summer social events doesn’t necessarily mean tearing your old bathroom out and starting again. In fact, all you really need to do is freshen things up a little bit!

Fresh scents

Let’s get this one out of the way first, shall we? It’s an unspoken fact that bathrooms can smell pretty terrible, and there’s nothing more off-putting than a bad stench.

The obvious way to keep your bathroom smelling fresh is air freshener, but the artificial smell of a cheap air freshener can be off-putting too.

A better idea is to introduce some fresh-smelling items into your bathroom. Potpourri provides an ongoing natural scent, while flowers can freshen up your bathroom while also providing a colourful focal point.

If you do opt for an air freshener over a natural alternative, however, go for an automatic dispenser. While they may cost more than a can of spray, these dispensers provide a measured spray of freshener every hour or so meaning that the scent of freshener never gets too overwhelming.

A new lick of paint

Repainting your bathroom is a slightly bigger job than some of the other ideas on this list, but is well worth considering if it’s been a few years since your last bout of redecoration. A fresh lick of paint can transform a bathroom, making the surroundings much more appealing to the eye.

To make the most of the plethora of sunlight we’re getting at the moment, opt for a light shade of cream or pale yellow. This will have the effect of reflecting sunlight and thus make your bathroom appear larger than it actually is.

Accessorise

Homeowners don’t tend to think about bathroom accessories when decorating their home and for good reason: it’s a room of function rather than fashion. Unfortunately, this line of thinking leads to some seriously drab bathrooms!

Accessories are a cost-effective way to add a new lease of life to your bathroom, with even the cheapest of accessories providing a focal point for guests. If you really want to impress your guests though, consider investing in one of our LED bathroom mirrors (or any other illuminated mirrors for that matter…) with a touch sensor!

Clear out clutter

Clutter isn’t something you’d necessarily associate with the bathroom, which is exactly why it exists. If anything, the bathroom is one of the worst rooms for clutter with half-filled cosmetics and toiletries taking up space and making the room look a mess.
The solution to this is simple; chuck whatever you don’t need or aren’t using anymore out! If you simply can’t bear to part with some of your cosmetic clutter, buy a wicker basket or similar to store it out of sight in.

The smallest of changes can make a big difference when it comes to bathrooms. If you’re worried about what guests will think of your bathroom, try out some of the tips above – they’re bound to make a difference!
